How the title game spots are decided
The two teams with the best conference winning percentage play in the Big 12 Championship Game. Ties are broken in this order:
- Head-to-head. With three or more teams: record among the tied teams if they all played each other. If not, a team that beat every other tied team advances; otherwise go to the next step.
- Record against all common conference opponents.
- Record against the next highest-placed common opponent, working down the standings. Tied opponents are treated as one group.
- Opponents' combined conference win percentage (strength of conference schedule).
- Total wins in a 12-game season (only one FCS win counts).
- SportSource Analytics team rating after the last regular-season weekend.
- Coin toss.
In a tie of three or more teams, one team is seeded at a time, and the rest start over. Once a tie is down to two teams, the two-team steps apply.
Fine print
- The SportSource rating is not public, so ties that reach that step show as undecided. In the odds, they are settled at random.
- When a step leaves several teams level at the top and drops the rest, the leaders start the procedure over. That is this site's reading of the policy. Where the conference's own call differs, the conference wins.
- Odds come from 8,000 simulations of every game you haven't picked. They use the betting spread when one is posted. Otherwise they use a simple scoring-margin rating with 2.5 points for home field.
- Scores come from ESPN's public scoreboard and refresh every couple of minutes. A game counts once it is final.
